While Wa-Nee
Community Schools has many fine facilities and programs to offer
students, it is the teachers, administrators and support staff who keep
our system running smoothly. More than 375 staff members work together
to maintain facilities, prepare meals, drive buses, coordinate office
operations, and most importantly, teach the children who attend the
Wa-Nee Schools.
Wa-Nee Community
Schools is proud of the many fine facilities that are shared by
our community. These facilities include three elementary schools, one
middle school and one high school. Wakarusa Elementary School is a new
school facility serving the students in the northern part of the school
district. Woodview Elementary School is a new facility serving the students
living on the northern edge of the city of Nappanee and in the rural
areas west, north and east of Nappanee. The newly renovated Nappanee
Elementary School serves students living in the city of Nappanee and
rural areas south of Nappanee. Wa-Nee's elementary schools house students
in grades K-6. The enrollment in the elementary schools typically ranges
from 500 to 610 students.
NorthWood Middle
School is located in the town of Wakarusa. NorthWood Middle School
houses students in grades 7 and 8 with an enrollment of 440 students.
Plans are under way to build a new middle school (grades 6-8) at the
existing middle school site.
Wa-Nee's high school
is NorthWood High School which is located on the northern edge of the
city of Napanee. NorthWood High School houses grades 9-12 with an enrollment
of 800 students.
The elementary program
is divided between a primary program, grades K-3 and an intermediate
program, grades 4-6. The primary program is designed to meet the developmental
needs of young children with optimal focus in the area of reading. Early
Prevention of School Failure is used as students enter kindergarten
through grade 3. Along with a strong emphasis on reading, a strong emphasis
is placed on learning the basics of mathematics. The reading and mathematics
programs promote a strong academic foundation for future school experiences.
Wa-Nee's intermediate program fulfills the unique roll between the Primary
and the Middle School. At this level Wa-Nee strives to strengthen the
basic learning skills, expand the intellectual potential of students,
develop computer skills, provide keyboard training and develop the emotional
and social resources of pre-adolescents. Emphasis is placed on personal
responsibility for learning, the development of self-discipline, and
the expansion of leadership skills.
Wa-Nee's elementary
schools are considered full-service schools. Each school has a full-time
principal, a full-time Guidance Counselor and a full-time nurse. Each
school has special teachers for the areas of Music, Art, Physical Education,
Speech Therapy, Special Education and Gifted and Talented programs.
Each elementary school has a fully equipped library that serves as the
"informational hub" of the school.

The NorthWood Middle
School serves as a "bridge" between upper elementary and
high school with special focus on the academic, social, physical and emotional
needs of adolescent boys and girls. A teaming concept is followed with
a major portion of the school day spent in the core subjects of Language
Arts, Social Studies, Mathematics and Science. Positive learning experiences
are emphasized as an effort is made to fully develop the unique personal
worth of each student.
NorthWood High
School is a comprehensive high school accredited by the North Central
Association of Colleges & Schools and rated as a first class commission
school in the state of Indiana. The high school curriculum ranges from
beginning to advanced "College preparatory" courses.
Technology plays an
important role in all the Wa-Nee schools as data cabling networks permit
computer, voice and video transmissions throughout the buildings. Called
the Integrated Information System, this system enables teachers to bring
computer and video resources into their classrooms from a central location
over the data and video cables. All the Wa-Nee Schools contain at least
two computer labs with NorthWood High School making use of nine separate
computer labs. Every classroom in the Wa-Nee School district has computers
that are available to the students and permits teachers to integrate technology
with the curriculum.
Wa-Nee Community
Schools is recognized throughout the state for its strong academic,
extra-curricular and athletic programs. Students at all levels are encouraged
to participate in the numerous programs offered.
